This year marks the 81st anniversary of Victory Day, the date on which the Soviet Union achieved the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany and the end of World War II in Europe. This date is of the utmost importance in Russia and the former Soviet republics, so parades are held in memory of the sacrifice of the Red Army.
All Russian embassies on the planet hold commemorative events for this date and Venezuela is no exception: it is a highly significant day because the capitulation of the Third Reich to the Allied forces and the Soviet Union was achieved, which then lost 27 million people.
The so-called ”Great Patriotic War" (1941-1945) left a deep scar on the national psyche. All citizens honor their ancestors on this day, because practically all Russian families were mutilated by losing members in this conflict. Hence the historical importance of remembering that the governments of all states must learn the lesson and avoid new world wars for the sake of all.
History cannot be erased
In recent years, the European authorities have tried to rewrite history by seeking to erase the Soviet contribution, omitting even the participation of Russia and Belarus in commemorative events. It is undeniable that the entry of the Red Army into Berlin marked the end of Nazism, although now they want to impose narratives that seek to distort this fact.
The destruction of monuments to the memory of Soviet soldiers is an intensified process in Eastern Europe since 2022. Countries such as Poland, Ukraine and the Baltics dismantle Red Army statues and Soviet-era symbols as symbols of occupation and not liberation. But the important thing at this moment in world history is to remember: the numerous wars of the past only left death, destruction and numerous examples of what should never be repeated.
